Winter History Hike series with THE RIVIERA
Location: Alpine, NJ
Date & Time: April 12, 2008 - May 1, 2008 :: 11:00 AM
Description: Venture outside as the Palisades Interstate Park culminates its Winter History Hike series with THE RIVIERA. Hikers should meet at the Visitor Center of the Park’s Fort Lee Historic Park. The shortest of the four hikes, this one will start with a stroll to an overlook at the north end of the Historic Park, where Nelsen will tell about the construction of the George Washington Bridge in 1931 and how the bridge—considered the busiest in the world—affected the development of northern New Jersey. The group will then hike south on the cliff-top Long Path to the site of the Riviera nightclub, which began operation shortly after the Bridge opened to traffic. The nightclub, which billed itself as “America’s Showplace,” headlined some of the biggest names of the 30s, 40s, and 50s, all of whom played on a revolving stage beneath a retractable roof that permitted starlight dancing. The club was closed in the 1950s to make way for the Palisades Interstate Parkway.
